Checkers
Play checkers online, your friends around the table
Rooftop is 3D rooms in the browser. Every Sirocco or Sylve room has its checkers table: two sit down, the others watch the game and talk about it out loud. The rules are those of the international game, on 100 squares. Free, nothing to install, a name is enough.
Play checkers
A game in three moves
- 1
Walk in with a name, make your room
At the game's door, “Enter as a guest”: a name is enough. Then “Create my room”, in Sirocco or Sylve: the checkers table is there. The room is private by default, with its link to send. Whoever opens it picks a name, arrives beside you and becomes your friend.
- 2
Sit at the table
Walk up to a stool and press E. The lone stool takes White, one of the other two takes Black, and the board opens on your side. A third stool is for watching, with no side taken.
- 3
Play
Your men that can move are lit. Click a man, then its square: your friend sees the move, and their board says “Your move”. When a capture is compulsory, the board says so and offers the captures only. Every move is written under the board, in players' notation, 1 to 50.
Good to know
- The rules are those of international draughts, the 100-square game: men move one square diagonally forward and capture forward and backward, capturing is compulsory and the capture that takes the most pieces must be played, kings move any distance, a man becomes a king by ending its move on the far row. White moves first; whoever cannot move has lost.
- Each player has 5 minutes, and 3 seconds more with every move played. The clock starts at White's first move. At zero, the game is lost on time.
- Anyone in the room can watch: from the third stool, or from wherever they stand, through the “Watch” chip that shows as soon as a game is on. They see the moves, hop by hop.
- A game that has started stays on the table: reload the page or let the room restart, it is there. A player gone from the room mid-game leaves their clock running, and after a minute the other may claim the win.
- A draw is offered and accepted, or comes by itself after 25 moves on each side played by kings alone, without a capture. “Resign” asks for a confirmation.
- A room is private by default: people enter by your link, or by joining a friend who is inside.
A leaderboard
A game of 4 moves or more counts: everyone starts at 1200 points and the standing moves at the end of each game, as in chess. “Leaderboard”, above the board, shows the 20 best players and the room's 10 last games, with how they ended.
Frequent questions
- Which rules? 64 squares or 100?
- 100 squares, the international game: compulsory capture and the biggest capture first, flying kings, men that capture backward.
- Do my friends need an account?
- No. They open your link and pick a name. Your email, later, keeps your profile and your rooms.
- Can we talk during the game?
- Yes. The room has its voice and its chat: those who watch comment, the players answer. Up to 15 people in a room's voice.
- What happens if my friend leaves the page?
- Their side stays theirs and their clock runs. If they come back, they pick up where the game was. If they have been gone from the room for a minute, you may claim the win.
- Can I play with nobody across the table?
- No. Two seated players are needed for a move to be played: there is no computer playing in your place.
- Is it free?
- Yes. Rooftop is free, in the browser. The shop sells extra room moods, nothing else.
