YouTube together
Watch YouTube together, each from home
Rooftop is 3D rooms in the browser. You share the tab your YouTube video plays in: it plays on the room's big screen, with the tab's sound from Chrome or Edge. Your friends open your link, arrive beside you and you talk about it out loud. Free, nothing to install.
Watch together
A video with friends, in three moves
- 1
Walk in with a name, make your room
At the game's door, “Enter as a guest”: a name is enough. Then “Create my room”: it is private by default, with its link to send.
- 2
Share the YouTube tab
On a computer, alone in your room, its big screen is waiting for you: “PLAY A VIDEO HERE”. In the “Voice” panel, press “Share my screen”, choose the YouTube tab and tick the tab's audio. Your mic comes into the call closed: the panel says so, “Mic off: nobody hears you.”, and “Mic” opens it when you want to talk.
- 3
Send the link to your friends
Alone at your first share, the game offers you “Invite”: the sheet that opens holds your room's link. Whoever opens it without an account picks a name, nothing else, arrives beside you and comes into the call to listen, without their browser asking for a microphone. For those in the call, the picture is on the big screen with nothing to press.
Good to know
- There is no shared player: your friends watch your tab. Pause, rewind and the next video are yours to do, in YouTube, and the room sees what your tab shows.
- You can stay on the YouTube tab: as long as you share, the room does not put you out for inactivity, even while the game's page stays hidden.
- You share from a computer. The tab's sound comes through in Chrome or Edge.
- For those who watch, Safari and Firefox hold the sound back on a page where nothing has been pressed yet: the game then shows a button to hear the room, and the first press lets the video's sound out with the voices.
- A room's call is full at 15 people, those who listen counted. Past 8 people in the call, the room can refuse a screen share, and says so to whoever shares.
- If your connection drops and comes back within two minutes, your voice comes back by itself. Your share does not: start it again.
Whose turn?
The room has one big screen. To hand over, stop your share, in the voice panel or with your browser's stop button: the big screen folds away. A friend who is listening then presses “Share my screen”: their tab plays, with “LIVE” and their name under it.
Frequent questions
- Do my friends need to install something or create an account?
- No. They open your link in their browser and pick a name. Rooftop plays in a web page: no extension, no app.
- Is the video synchronised between us?
- There is nothing to synchronise: there is one player, yours. Your friends watch the share of your tab, not the video each on their own side.
- Why the microphone when I share my screen?
- To share, you have to be in the room's call with a microphone. “Share my screen” brings yours in closed: nobody hears you until you have pressed “Mic”.
- Can we talk during the video?
- Yes. The video's sound and the voices are two separate sounds: one does not replace the other. In the voice panel, click the name of a friend whose mic is on to set their volume for you alone, or “Mute for me”. The video's sound has no volume setting of its own in the room.
- Can we see the video bigger?
- Yes. In the voice panel, the tile “Screen of … · see” opens the share over the whole page. A click or Escape closes it.
- Can we turn off the room's music?
- Yes: in the menu, “Settings”, then “Music”. Left alone, it gets quieter as soon as you are in the voice.
- What does a friend who left the voice see?
- The big screen tells them who is live. “Listen”, in the voice panel, puts them back in the call, where the picture shows.
